Hello, thanks for checking in!

We are just a week away from the January 31st Board Hearing. It is probably best to make any comments in person, as they may not have time to get added to the agenda or distributed to the Board members for comment. All the detail I could find are outlined in the following links.

Thanks for a great turnout at the January meeting, a huge thanks to Ursula Guthrie of Advanced Elevator Technologies for filling in for me. Ursula gets extra credit for filling for our Treasurer. It is a good feeling to have key MESA members to rely on.The

MESA Board has agreed that a slight increase in the lunch fee is required to cover the increased cost at Phillips. The goal is to break even on the lunch program and we have not for the past few months. We did some investigation for other locations, but the combination of the room size, menu, and free parking keep Phillips as the preferred location. The bottom line, the lunch fee will increase from $20 to $25. There is alot of information and pertinent links with key points to our business within this post, so be sure to scroll to the end.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING!

A public hearing has been scheduled for January 31, 2012 at 1pm, at One Ashburton Place, Ashburton Cafe Function Room in Boston. New regulations are being presented to establish a structure for the registration and responsibilities of elevator contractors. The new system will allow the Department of Public Safety to hold elevator companies accountable for their actions. Details at this link:

Memoriam – Emelia Prescott

Good Afternoon,

It was brought to our attention that friend of the Massachusetts Elevator Industry, Emeilia Prescott past away recently. Mrs. Prescott is survived by her husband Arthur. While the services are private, there is an online guest book at www.legacy.com.

MESA offers our sincerely condolences to the Prescott family.

Good Morning!

What do I need to submit to obtain a permit?

If this is a new installation, a relocation or material change (as defined by 524 CMR section 15.01:(2)), you are required to submit plans signed by a registered architect or a registered professional engineer. The plans shall bear a registering stamp certifying that the registered architect or P.E. has examined the plans and found that the building structure will comply with the contract load plus its tare as they are shown on the elevator drawing.

New installation plans (layout drawings) shall also include all items (where applicable) listed in A17.1 – 2004 Section 2.28, 524 CMR Section 35:00 Part 2 Section 2.28 and Part 3 Section 3.28.1.

If you are applying for a new installation, relocation, material change and alteration/modernization permit you are required to submit plans and/or specifications in a hard copy and electronic submission (copy of the plans and/or specifications in PDF format on a CD or flash drive) for the equipment you will be installing.

No elevator shall be installed or altered until a copy of the plans and specifications of such elevator or of the proposed alterations have been filed by the owner of the premises where such elevator is to be installed or altered, or by the manufacturer of such elevator (M.G.L. Chapter 143 Section 62).

All applications not submitted properly will be returned.

MESA Elections

A request was made for a MESA election. Please attend the February meeting ready to volunteer for MESA Board positions. This message carries a warning, you don’t have to be present to be nominated but you must be present to decline. In effect, you could be elected in absence…just kidding…or are we?

2012 G. Gahr Finney Scholarship

The $2000 Scholarship applications are available for our member’s high school seniors. To be eligible the applicant’s family member or their employing company must be a paid member for two consecutive years.

DPS Elevator Task Group Meeting Recap

Hello everyone,

The DPS Elevator Task Group meeting on December 7th clarified a few things, but unfortunately clouded as many.

The big discussion revolved around the $1,000 per day penalty for operating a unit with an expired certificate, while officially it has not been adopted as legislation, it goes into effect December 28th. However, the language defining the execution of this legislation has not been defined. The best advise is to submit annual inspection applications 60 days prior to their expiration. At this point, there does not seem to be a means for an emergency submission if there has been an oversight or other unforeseen circumstance, more than likely a fine will be levied.
